WINNING HABITS: How to Turn A Few Moments A Day Into A Lifetime of Fulfillment
By Dick Lyles
Prentice Hall (NYP)
WINNING HABITS is a business parable that builds on the lessons and characters of the authors Winning Ways (Putnam HC 2000), which sold 17,000+ copies in hardcover and is currently out in mass-market paperback.
In Dicks new book we find Jennifer and Albert adjusting to life in southern California after a promotion for Jennifer caused a move from Chicago. All is going well until Albert realizes he is not getting promoted as quickly as Jennifer and his colleagues. In fact, hes not getting promoted at all. His next-door neighbor links him up with retired Admiral John Paul Jones Farragut. On board his magnificent yacht, the Admiral helps Albert realize that in spite of a keen intellect and good people skills, hes never quite developed the right personal habits to carry him forward. New insights and understandings motivate Albert to learn and apply the habits: 1) Be first on, last off, and add extra value; 2) Never trade results for excuses; 3) Solve problems in advance; 4) Always make those around you look good. Albert applies these new habits to both his personal and professional life with great results. He earns the respect of his colleagues, who nickname him "Value-added Albert."
Winning Ways was published in Brazil, Canada, China, Columbia, Holland, Israel, Turkey, and the United Kingdom and was an Amazon.com bestseller. The unabridged audio tape version of the book is produced by Harper Audio. (Putnam chose not to exercise its option on the second book, presumably because despite good sales Winning Ways did not earn out its mid-six-figure advance!)
WINNING HABITS fits squarely in the parable tradition of such best-selling titles as The One Minute Manager, Who Moved My Cheese, Gung Ho, Fish, and Raving Fans. All books that are fun to read, have clear and concise messages, and generally can be finished on a single leg of an airline trip. In addition to appealing to the widest range of bookstore consumers of business self-help titles, this book will sell in bulk to many of the clients of Leadership Legacies, Dicks consulting company, insuring the sale of many thousands of copies each year. Dick will promote the book in conjunction with all his speeches, workshops, and seminars, generally requiring that each attendee receive a copy of the book.
Dick is the former president of The Ken Blanchard Companies. During 2002 Dick delivered more than 100 keynote speeches to a broad range of audiences. He delivers an average of six presentations per month to executives, managers, human resource professionals, college students and professors. He has appeared on more than 60 radio and TV talk shows and has had dozens of articles written about his work as a consultant as an expert on leadership, management, and major global business trends. For three decades Dick has consulted with the leaders of major organizations around the world and has authored four successful business and management books.
The complete manuscript about 22,000 words is included with the proposal. It has been reviewed and critiqued by more than fifty people, including other parable authors (Ken Blanchard, Spencer Johnson, and Sheldon Bowles), as well as business authors, training and consulting professionals, and business leaders.
