COMING OUT OF THE WOODS: The Solitary Life of a Maverick Naturalist
Kaufman, Wallace
Perseus Publishing (2000)
COMING OUT OF THE WOODS recounts the experiences of an environmentalist who has lived from 1974 deep in the forest of North Carolina, a decision that cost him his family. He survived a broken back, invented new ways of living with wild animals, nurtured a black vulture, excavated an Indian campsite and a century old farm cabin, collected and sold wild mushrooms, and learned to read history in the grain and shapes of trees and the shapes of the earth. After two decades of this life he arrived at conclusions that surprised many in the environmental community. With the perspective of modern science, the author sees more deeply into the processes of nature than Thoreau could and has a broader view of American life and achievement. The author's journey forces his readers to rethink America's romance with nature.
