TO SEIZE THE TRITON
By Douglas Burgess
International Marine (NYP)
What prompts the enchantment readers have for great ships? Sepia images of grand lounges and palm courts, images of a gentler time, have long exerted a powerful lure to generations of romantics
To Seize the Triton takes readers through one of the most colorful races in history, the contest between the British and the Germans to build the biggest, fastest, and most luxurious passenger ships on the Atlantic. Sparked in 1889 by the Kaisers declaration, after visiting a British liner in England that he would "seize the triton" from the English shipping firms of Cunard and White Star, the battle would soon evolve into a clash between the titans of politics and industry, and eventually change the course of history itself. To Seize the Titan is the story of this competition.
Author Douglas Burgess holds a J.D. with a Concentration in International Public Law from Cornell University. He is the author of several short pieces of creative writing.
