A LITTLE BIT SIDEWAYS
Huler, Scott
Motorbooks (January 1999)

The appeal of NASCAR racing is no longer limited to beer-swilling good ol' boys. It's becoming a national passion. According to Montgomery Securities, between 1990 and 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup races chalked up nearly a 50% increase in attendance to 5.4 million—while NFL attendance increased by 8% and Major League Baseball fell by 6%. Plus some 20 million Americans tune in to Winston Cup race broadcasts on each of 31 Sundays a year. Moreover, NASCAR fans spend money on their favorite sport. The average ticket price at a Winston Cup race is $55, far higher than the average for any other sport, and annual NASCAR licensed product sales run to $600 million, which excludes all the money loyal fans spend on products of NASCAR sponsors. None of the existing books on NASCAR racing—most picture books or driver biographies—probes beneath the surface of the sport or takes readers behind the scenes the way Scott's book does. His is the first to let fans in on the secrets of racing and to give non-fans an understanding of this cultural phenomenon.
