New England Publishing Associates (NEPA) was founded in 1983 as a full-service literary agency specializing in non-fiction books for the adult market. Since then we have placed more than 650 of our clients titles with some 100 U.S. and overseas publishers. Do to our heavy existing work load, we are not currently taking on new clients.
Our mission is to provide personalized service to all of our authors. We work closely with our clients to shape and perfect each proposal so that it can be sold to the right editor at the right publisher, giving personal and expert attention to placing each project entrusted to us. Once a sale has been made, we take the time to work with both the author and the publishing house to ensure a smooth and successful collaboration.
In addition to placing books with U.S. publishers, NEPA works closely with associated agents in London, Tokyo, and other overseas publishing centers to sell foreign rights to the books we represent.
While NEPA has successfully placed books on a wide-range of subjects, we are particularly strong in biographies, business, crime, science, history, and reference/information books. We do not handle fiction, juvenile books, poetry, or screenplays.
Like most agents, we charge a basic 15% commission on domestic book sales. Commissions on foreign rights, electronic rights, and movie rights are 20% since generally we have to pay subagents to complete these sales. We do NOT charge reading fees of any kind. Unless otherwise agreed in writing, clients WILL be asked to reimburse NEPA for photocopying proposals, sample text, and manuscripts at the rate of $.05 per page for the client's proposal and sample text. Clients do have the option to make the necessary copies on their own and ship them to us.
Here is the complete list of what clients are charged for:
1. Photocopying manuscripts and proposals when necessary at $.05 per page
2. Overseas shipments to foreign publishers and co-agents
3. Courier charges above and beyond standard USPS and UPS Ground service
4. Bank charges on foreign check clearance and the like
5. Copies of your books purchased from the publisher when needed to market translation and other sub-rights
6. Other exceptional third-party costs with prior approval of client
