LET’S BUY A COMPANY: How to Accelerate Small Company Growth with Acquisitions
By H. Lee Rust
Career Press (NYP)

Acquisitions and mergers aren’t just for billion-dollar outfits. They can be just as effective as a strategy to grow many small and mid-sized companies. Yet, nearly every book on the subject ignores small companies where expertise on mergers and acquisitions is limited to address companies with annual sales of well over $500 million – the very companies least in need of a how-to book on the subject.

The target readers for LET’S BUY A COMPANY are business owners or presidents of companies with annual sales of $1 million to $100 million. These represent the vast majority of U.S. companies – some 1.1 million of them – and the ones most in need of this information. There is a large secondary market of consultants, accountants and lawyers who provide services to such businesses as well as professors who teach courses in business schools on entrepreneurship or mergers and acquisitions. Publicity can be targeted to reach all these markets in magazines like Inc., Entrepreneur, Kiplinger, Black Enterprise, Business 2.0, Small Business Opportunities and the like as well as through direct mail and Internet marketing.

The book delivers a complete, thorough, and comprehensive guide to using acquisitions or mergers as a means of dramatically increasing a company’s revenues and profits. The 120,000-word book not only describes each aspect of the entire acquisition process but also includes a workbook section with examples, anecdotes, forms, and financial spreadsheets from actual M&A transactions the author has completed for his small-company consulting clients. The chapters are intentionally short, usually between 1,200 to 2,000 words, making the book easy to use as a reference guide for a quick review of every step of the acquisition process.

The manuscript is complete except for final editing and polishing. As a means of increasing both the audience for the book and its utility, it could be packaged with a complete CD version. That would allow buyers to search the text by key word and to actually use the Excel spreadsheets provided on the CD to develop their own calculations and analyzes for acquisitions and mergers they might pursue.
