THE EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT MANAGER: Leading With the Heart
By David R. Caruso, Ph.D., & Peter Salovey, Ph.D.
Jossey-Bass (NYP)
THE EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT MANAGER: Leading With the Heart will be the first trade book written by the psychologists who along with their colleague Jack Mayer originated the theory of emotional intelligence popularized by Dan Goleman. Although written by the pre-eminent authorities on the subject, the book will be a practical and down-to-earth guide to understanding, developing and applying emotional intelligence at work that will appeal to savvy cubicle-dwellers as well as higher-level managers. Thus, this book has an authority and an audience reach that none of the other books on EI can match.
Nearly all of the more than 4 million books on emotional intelligence that have been sold are why to, not how to. They have primed the market for a book that provides the tools people need to develop and apply these critical business skills. THE EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT MANAGER offers readers concrete and proven strategies backed up by the authors own scientific research. At the heart of the 50,000-word book is a simple model that people can easily grasp.
David R. Caruso, Ph.D., is a research affiliate at Yale, a management psychologist, and vice president of assessment at Harris-McCully Associates, Inc., a human resource consulting firm. He designed and runs highly-acclaimed interactive workshops on emotional intelligence and also teaches emotional skills to individuals and groups. He has published more than two dozen scientific articles and chapters on a number of topics, with a focus on emotional intelligence. Peter Salovey, Ph.D., is the Chris Argyris Professor of Psychology and Professor Epidemiology & Public Health and chair of the Department of Psychology at Yale. A leading authority on the psychological consequences of mood and emotion, he has been interviewed frequently by The New York Times, Time, and other newspapers and magazines. He has written or edited eight books and more than 175 journal articles. Peter is a founding editor of the Review of General Psychology and an associate editor of the new APA journal, Emotion.
Peter and David have worked together on book chapters, research projects, consulting assignments and speaking engagements, and co-authored with Jack Mayer two ability tests of emotional intelligence. The Mayer, Salovey, Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) uses the same model found in THE EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT MANAGER. As top authorities in the field, the authors can provide book endorsements from a number of business and academic colleagues. The authors have spoken at more than 100 events over the last several years and have given invited addresses in England, Norway, Sweden, Israel, Korea, India, South Africa, and Japan. In addition, they work in the U.S. with many large corporations and hold emotional intelligence workshops open to the public.
