THE DOGS WHO GREW ME
By Ann Pregosin
Capital Books (2002)
THE DOGS WHO GREW ME is a memoir recalling the lessons the author learned growing
up with five distinct breeds of dogs: American cocker spaniel, Great Dane, wolf-hybrid,
rottweiler and Bernese Mountain dog. Pregosin discusses how typical each dog was of its
respective breed, describes who the dogs were as individuals, and reflects on the
invaluable lessons they taught her, that is, how they "grew" her as a person.
The lessons the canines taught Pregosin include the merits of perseverance, of learning
the 'Rules, the foibles of excessive rigidity and self-defeating aggression, and
much more.
Pregosin is a regular contributor to FOX NEWS CHANNEL's "Pet News" show, providing its producers with dog topics in need of news coverage: timely medical issues, new dog products, dog-training issues, specific dog-breed issues. "Pet News" relies on Pregosins familiarity with all but the most obscure of dog breeds, coupled with her in-depth knowledge of the American cocker spaniel, the Great Dane, Siberian husky, the malamute, the rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog, the wolf, and wolf-hybrid. Pregosin trained all the dogs in THE DOGS WHO GREW ME, one of them, Timber, with such success that the animal was able to do commercial work. Tyler is following in Timbers footsteps. His credits: a live in-studio appearance on FOX's "Pet News" to show how to teach a dog to ignore distractions. Subsequently, Tyler did three additional dog-training segments taped in Central Park plus a national "Lysol" commercial.
Pregosin is also the author of How Not To Kill Your Houseplants (Macmillan, 1986). She lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
