CLIMBING OLYMPUS: The Spiritual Power of Greek Myth
By Stephen Bertman, Ph.D.
Sourcebooks (2003)

Drawing on the timeless heritage of ancient Greece, classical scholar Steve Bertman identifies eight pillars of wisdom enshrined in the mythic legacy of the Greek past. Using these pillars, Bertman tells us we can build a personal temple that will hold the basis for a fuller and more meaningful life. Throughout the book, the guiding principles of Greek civilization are illustrated with vivid examples drawn from Classical mythology and literature.

Most inspirational and personal growth books are too shallow and simplistic to appeal to sophisticated readers. Yet, such readers suffer just as much from a spiritual malaise as the rest of the population. CLIMBING OLYMPUS responds to their needs by going to the very roots of Western civilization for the inspirational direction our contemporary society lacks. In the wisdom of ancient Greece, the book finds a reservoir of reassurance about our human possibilities and a philosophical guide to help the individual find happiness and meaning in today’s world. In addition, the book will attract legions of readers who are intrigued by vanished civilizations and are fascinated by the splendor of Greek mythology.

Bertman received his doctorate in Greek and Latin Literature from Columbia University, and holds additional degrees in Classics from New York University and in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis. His books include Art and the Romans, The Conflict of Generations in Ancient Greece and Rome, and Doorways Through Time: The Romance of Archaeology. More recently, he has explored the challenges of contemporary civilization in Hyperculture: The Human Cost of Speed (Praeger, 1998) and Cultural Amnesia: America’s Future and the Crisis of Memory (Praeger, Spring 2000). Archaeologist Cyrus Gordon has written: Bertman is "a lucid writer, whose scholarship has not stifled the poet within him. It is the combination of savant, poet, and generalist that makes Bertman unique."
