1,001 THINGS YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CATS
By J. Stephen Lang
Howell House/John Wiley
Why (and how) do cats purr? Can they swim if necessary? Why were the ancient Egyptians so taken with cats? (They had at least one cat-headed goddess, and they made mice mummies for their cat mummies.) Why are cats associated with witchcraftand with bad luck? What is the source of "grinning like a Cheshire cat"? (It pre-dates Alice in Wonderland.)
Arranged in topical chapterscat habits, legends, words and phrases, pop culture, literature, etc., this book will present 1,001 brief (usually just one or two paragraphs) tidbits about catstheir habits, their history as pets, myths and legends about them, words and phrases associated with them, how they have been presented in literature, art, pop culture, religion, etc. Each entry causes the reader to react with "Wow, I never knew that!"
Cat-lovers constitute a very large audience. Parade magazine recently trumpeted the information that there are now more cats than dogs owned in the U.S.--73 million cats, 68 million dogs, according to the 2002 National Pet Owners Survey. According to the Census Bureau, 31.6 percent of American households have at least one cat. Among the millions of cat-owners, many are new to cats and frankly know very little about them. Since cat books have a strong sales track record and so have trivia books in the 1,001 format, this book has a double appeal both to bookstore managers and their customers. Although there are shelves full of cat books, there are no trivia-type books on cats on the market.
J. Stephen Lang has published 25 books with cumulative sales of well over a million copies. Most of his previous books have dealt with the Bible or the Civil War. However, his Big Book of American Trivia has been a consistently strong seller. Four of his previous books were in the "1,001 Things" format.
